I think about the fact that I can get 30-32 mpg on the highway with my '99 V6 Passat, which is a rather large sedan, and I look at the ratings for small sedans and hatchbacks with small 4 cylinder engines that aren't rated to get much better than 35 or 40 mpg and I just scratch my head. @Josie - I totally agree. I wanted to make sure you were aware of the Car-sharing concept: http://www.carsharing.net/ It's something I've been interested in starting up in Richmond, and I think having a SMART and a better long-haul car in the fleet would be great.
